cultivate your curves

Have you ever hit a curve going way too fast? And then somehow you managed to compensate correctly and make the curve with all body parts intact?

For Christmas, I got a fancy new bicycle from my sweet husband. Over the course of the last month with the weather getting nicer, I have been learning the in’s and out’s of this new bike. Keep in mind I had my previous bike for 25 years and it is an old, dear friend to me.

On this new bike I go much faster. On hills it is a dream. What I discovered a few weeks ago was that because the new bike is so light, it is much faster than I previously have been able to go!

Recently on a ride through the country with my husband, I hit a curve in the country road. Midway through, an unexpected car appeared! All of a sudden every sense in my being took over and tried to keep me from completely wiping out…

As I overcompensated in order to avoid the car, I headed off the road and flew through a dirt filled weed patch… somehow making it back on the road again unharmed. I don’t know if it was the angels watching over me, or the sheer will of my mind visualizing how much it would hurt if I went flying at that speed off the bike.

As I joined my husband back on the road, I was really shaking and just kept on pedaling… grateful to still be upright on the bike.

We have been talking about Leadership this month. In our role as Leaders both in business and at home, the curves are fairly frequent. Sometimes we can hit them too fast and sometimes too slow. It is when you hit the curve just right that the momentum for the next turn is just right.

As we stick with the curve, it will eventually become straight and we can prepare for the next curve down the road. In the case of my new bike, I actually flew off the curve altogether! But I stuck with it and made it out in one piece. If I had severely panicked and ditched my bike as I left the curve, I would have ended up with many scratches that I didn’t need.

One thing I know for sure at this stage of my life is that the curves don’t diminish. As we get older, they just seem to come on faster! What I have learned is that the only way to take the curves is to be as flexible as I can to take them on.

How about you? What has been the most recent curve you have hit in your role as a leader? How did you deal with the fear that hits you when you had the flash in your mind that you might come crashing down?

The mantra we have around our house is, “Life is what you make it.” As you head into your week… keep your eye on the road in front of you. Be flexible with the curves and trust yourself that you will make it through!
